Avoiding ACL Surgery – New Research That Could Help Ringwood Athletes

You’ve just torn your ACL. The first thing that pops into most people’s heads? “When’s the surgery?”

But here’s the thing — not everyone needs an ACL reconstruction.

In recent years, high-quality research has shown that for some people, non-surgical management can be just as effective — especially when the rehab is structured and progressive.

If you’re based in Ringwood and trying to decide what’s next, here’s what the latest evidence says about avoiding surgery — and how physiotherapy plays a critical role.

Do You Have to Get ACL Surgery?

Not necessarily.

Traditionally, athletes were rushed straight to a surgeon. But we now know that for some patients — especially those who aren't returning to pivoting sports — surgery may not be required.

Even if surgery ends up being the best path for you, going through at least 5–12 weeks of structured rehab first improves outcomes significantly.

The benefits of this approach include:

  • Better pre-op strength
  • Faster post-op recovery
  • More confidence in movement
  • Some patients avoid surgery altogether

So Who Might Avoid ACL Surgery?

Based on recent research and what we see in clinic, non-surgical treatment can be successful if:

  • You have minimal knee instability (no major giving way episodes)
  • You don’t play high-risk sports like football, netball, or basketball
  • You commit to a proper rehab plan and follow strength milestones
  • You don’t have significant associated damage (like a meniscus tear)

If you’re unsure, your physiotherapist can run functional tests and monitor progress in the early stages. We regularly help Ringwood patients decide whether to continue non-surgically or opt for surgery after a trial period of rehab.

What Does Non-Surgical ACL Rehab Look Like?

The rehab pathway is similar to post-surgical recovery — except the knee heals naturally over time, and we aim to restore strength, control, and function without needing reconstruction.

Key focuses include:

  • Restoring full knee extension early
  • Building quad, glute, and hamstring strength
  • Improving balance and proprioception
  • Progressive return to impact and agility drills
  • Testing before returning to sport or full activity

It’s not a shortcut — it’s still a long-term rehab process. But the goal is to get your knee strong enough that it doesn’t need surgical support.

What If You Decide on Surgery Later?

You haven’t lost anything. In fact, patients who go into ACL surgery strong and well-prepared come out better on the other side.

We’ll make sure your knee is:

  • Swelling-free
  • Walking normally
  • Fully extended and flexed
  • Strengthening daily

This makes surgical recovery smoother, reduces time off sport, and minimises complications.
